Askews Foods in Armstrong, Salmon Arm, and Sicamous use 100% degradable plastic shopping bags (grocery bag), with help from EPI Environmental Products Inc.  These are strong grocery bags, but don't store anything in them too long (one year) or your things may scatter when you go to pick up the bag :)

According to the Telegraph newspaper in the UK, “Reusable shopping bags are a threat to public health,”

Tests on shoppers’ bags revealed half contained traces of E.coli, a lethal toxin which killed 26 people in Scotland in 1996 in one of the world’s worst food poisoning outbreaks. Scientists also found many were contaminated with salmonella. American TV station ABC also reports on this debated topic with the following video, “Are Bacteria in your reusable shopping bag??”

Re: Plastic bag ban

Plastic bags are biodegradable.

First they also provide garbage bags for home use such as garbage bags which stops using the heavier bags which may not be biodegradable

The bags "sold" at the grocery store also have plastic in them and are unsanitary after used a few times so I believe that this is a no win situation of political correctness which will only hit the poorer people up with more money out of their pockets.

Too bad as they are the ones who get hurt the most.

Single Use Plastic Bag Policy (from pg 2)

2) Single Use Plastic Bag Policy
There has been significant debate about single-use plastic bags over the past several years with numerous jurisdictions deciding to restrict their use through tax levees, bans and/or campaigns to promote re-useable bags. The Board requested that, following the UBCM debate and position, the RWRO make a recommendation for a local policy.

Due to limited resources caused by changing personnel levels and the focus on the launch and roll-out of the automated waste collection system, staff has written a draft report but is unable to bring it forward for discussion at this time. It is recommended that the request be deferred until mid to late-2009 when staff levels are re-established and the automated collection system is fully rolled-out.

Some facts about plastic shopping bags from Regional District of Central Okanagan Governance and Services Committee Agenda June 12, 2008

  • Ninety-three percent of British Columbians reuse their shopping bags two or more times (Decima Research, 2006).

  • If shopping bags are banned, residents are more apt to purchase "kitchen catchers" and may increase the overall plastic resin used in a community (Canadian Plastics Industry Association, 2006)

c) Plastic Bag Ban
Carol reported that Mayor Shepherd had requested information be presented to the Committee on the recent trend of banning plastic shopping bags. Her report was discussed and the consensus of the Committee was that this is a private sector issue and nothing should change.
Within Carol’s report under ‘Some Facts about Plastic Bags’ an amendment was made to read: “It takes 11.325 million barrels of oil to produce 100 billion plastic bags” (NOT 20 billion barrels)
THAT the report be received. CARRIED
