How does garbage disposal 24/7 sound to you?
Mostly okanaganlakebc.ca just want access like most people out here. If we had 24/7 access nobody will have to make special trips because we can't dispose of garbage when we drive by on our way to work, etc. We realize garbage bag lockers would take up a lot of space and that they may not be the best to put at each of the subdivisions, but how about at the current transfer stations and somehow have 24/7 access?
You know how you had a locker at school or work? Well how about a garbage bag locker with your address on it just like the green mailboxes do either at each subdivision or at the current transfer stations. This would save on pollution and wasting peoples time.
If people are worried about the garbage bag lockers being in their subdivision, then maybe put the lockers at the current transfer station locations, but allow residents access to them 24/7 for household garbage that deteriorates fast in the summer.
The lockers could be made of plastic and the compartments could be sealed so as to not let the stink out, unless they are being opened or closed. The lockers would most likely need to be in a chain link fenced compound because of bears but residents could enter through a gate locked or not.... depending on if RDCO requires it to be locked but preferably not.
No need to hire extra people to man the garbage lockers! Just have enough room inside another fenced compound for people to walk and not a bunch of room for people to throw their garbage too.... just enough room to walk!
The garbage collector could check for hazardous waste without someone attending to the lockers at all times. If the hazardous waste was in your compartment then you are the one responsible and have to pay more. There could be a fine if you put hazardous waste in your locker if we were not permitted hazardous waste because they know who's locker it is.
The locker compartments could be a little larger than the size limit for the amount of garbage RDCO limits you to throw so that if you had an extra bag that week and wanted to pay extra for garbage you could. The garbage collector could keep track of how many bags are in each locker and nobody would need a punch card.
You could use a combination lock so that nobody looses a key and the whole family could have access without having to find out who in your family may have the card.
The larger transfer station at Sugar Loaf could still take extra garbage that didn't fit in the locker, plus larger items like appliances and furniture that people might have the odd time when cleaning closets plus Shelley could keep her job.
RDCO's Reply to the Garbage Bag Locker Idea
At the present time, we’re not aware of any such system being available. This
will require further research and consideration of any financial implications.

Remember that residents were told by Carol Suhan (waste dept. at RDCO) that to build and run an extra manned transfer station at LaCasa, that it would not cost residents any more than what they already pay ($40.00 per year utility bill).
