COMMENTS

On the Labour day weekend while boating on Lake Okanagan in the vicinity of Ellison Prov.Park we came across a boater in distress. Their 22' pleasure craft had become disabled, and while there were plenty of boaters in the area, no one was aiding them. With paddles in hand they were safe but a long way from their base. So like any good boater we asked them if they needed help and while they did not put any pressure on us, they were asking and hoping for a tow. We were going the opposite direction and enjoying the sunny afternoon, and had other plans but now felt obliged to help knowing that one day, this could be us. They assured us the tow would not be that long, somewhere across from Fintry. I have a Mastercraft ProStar ski boat and the tow boat was a 21-23' Searay or similar open bow I/O with a family of 4. Only able to safely tow at 1000rpm or about 7 mph, the tow took over 45 minutes. On arrival somewhere close to Carrs Landing they were very grateful and offered some gas money, from a wallet they did not have. So they took our phone# and input it to their cell phone and promised a phone call and some compensation. We never received the phone call. I am very disappointed that a seemingly genuine family in distress would not make more of an effort to contact us after the effort we made to help them and put our day aside for them. Nonetheless, we would do it again, because you never know when you will need the favor.

COMMENTS

I attended the recent public meeting put on by GDH Solutions who are heading up the boat launch study in the North Okanagan. The meeting quickly turned into a whine session with members of the Kalavista Committee trying to take over the meeting. This is the same small group of property owners who live near the Kalavista Launch in Coldstream and who continually lobby for reduced parking for boat trailers and reduced access to the north arm of Kalamalka Lake. This study is supposed to be looking at accomodating boating needs for the next twenty years not how to please a small group of disgruntled residents who bought property near a busy launch and lake and now want it all changed for them. I hope this study is not sidetracked by this small group who do not care about everyone elses rights to access and enjoy "THEIR" lake. The Lake Watch rep was at the meeting and even said that there was very little problems at this launch this year and only a few reports to their office this boating season. Hopefully the government and the anti-boating community will be brought into check and butt out on other peoples recreational time. Enough is enough lets stop this attack on boating now!
